Dear Friends,

The medical mission will be held in Mati, Davao Oriental, a fifth-class capital city located in southeastern Mindanao from January 28-February 2, 2018. It is about 3-4 hours, east of Davao City and 600+ miles south of Manila.  Davao Oriental is one of the poorest provinces in the Davao Region as well as the Philippines and has a population of 558,958 as of 2015. The economy is mainly agricultural with fishing and mining as other sources of income.

This is an annual project run by UPMASA and Ugnayan ng Pahinungod-Manila, the medical mission division of the University of the Philippines-Manila. The latter is based at the Philippine General Hospital. For this particular mission, we will also partner with 2 Davao-based medical mission groups namely the Halad Foundation and the Social Concern Foundation in cooperation with the provincial and city governments.

Mission services will include major surgeries such as thyroid goiters, breast tumors, hernias, gall bladders and hysterectomies and minor surgeries. Medical and dental services will also be provided as well as the distribution of reading glasses. Free medication and health education will be dispensed at the clinics.

“Why do we do this year after year? For the joy of seeing a child smile at his own image in the mirror after cleft lip repair!”   For the happiness in a patient after a thyroidectomy and finds their bulging neck mass gone!   Seeing that “their lives have been changed forever” is priceless.

UPMASA is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the USA (IRS TIN: 37-1099415). Your donations are tax-deductible. Please send your check payable to UPMASAand in the memo, add “medical mission 2018″. Please mail it to me or to Dr. Rene Mandanas, UPMASA treasurer, at 1 Mayflower Circle, Oswego NY 13126.
