OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Holiday greetings to the members of the UP Medical Alumni Society in America!

As we close the second year of this pandemic, I express the University’s gratitude to all of you, both medical professionals and UP alumni. We will never tire of thanking you for these notable and noble roles, especially at this time.

Your support is one of the reasons our University remains resilient and stands firm amid the global health crisis. Your generosity and sense of urgency have been a tremendous help to our students, health care workers, campus communities, and the Filipino nation.

UPMASA’s initiatives impacted beneficiaries from both sides of the Pacific. From grants and scholar ships to other avenues of donation, what you have been doing has a ripple effect on the health care system.

By strengthening the capabilities of our medical school and hospital, and our students’ capacity to learn, you are creating fertile ground for the health sector to flourish. The Medical Sciences Building in UP Manila, for instance, will be vital for education and research. Virtual anatomy tables for our students give them the affordances of practical learning initially hampered by COVID-19. Personal protective equipment for our hospital workers provided a sense of security during these trying times. UPMASA gave comfort and relief amid uncertainty through the community pantry in UP Manila. While damage assessment and funding needs are still ongoing, the immediate reaction to the PGH fire was genuinely heartwarming. That readiness and willingness to respond are the Tatak UP in all of you.

I want to make special mention of the support your organization has extended to the University Health Service of UP Los Baños, as well as your contributions to UP Diliman’s community pantries. Those gestures, reaching out to other UP units, speak volumes about your generosity.

What you have been doing for UP significantly impacts the larger community because by helping your alma mater, you are allowing UP to provide better public service. Even more laudable is that UPMASA has also been an active partner in various projects that directly benefit people and communities outside the University—medical missions, surgery programs, Doctors to the Barrios, memorial funds, and innovation of medical equipment, among many others.

As UP President and a UP alumnus, I am immensely proud of UPMASA and your members because of the time, expertise, and financial resources you generously give to the University—all towards achieving the common good.  Your accomplishments fill me with great hope for humanity’s future as we soldier on and finally emerge victorious from this pandemic.

Mabuhay ang UPMASA! Mabuhay ang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas!

                                                                                                                                                                               DANILO L. CONCEPCION

Carmencita Padilla, MD

Report on the Nenita L. Roa, MD Legacy

A total of 37 School of Health Sciences Nursing students received financial assistance from UPMASA – Necita L. Roa MD Charitable Foundation (NLRMDCF) Legacy. This is broken down into 16 students from SHS Palo, 9 students from SHS Baler, and 12 students from SHS Koronadal. Each UPMASA scholar received USD 1,500.00 as “partial scholarship to help them in their educational endeavors” and USD 186.17 to purchase a computer tablet.

What is the School of Health Sciences (SHS)? It is one of the 9 academic units of UP Manila. It offers a ladderized program of Midwifery, Nursing and Medicine.  There are 4 extension campuses – Palo, Leyte (1981); Baler, Aurora (2008); Koronadal, South Cotabato (2010); and Tarlac, Tarlac (2021).

The students are recruited directly from the community to enter a course of Midwifery. After 2 years, the midwives immediately return to their communities for their return service agreement (RSA). After the RSA, some midwives proceed with Nursing education and again, after graduation, go back to their communities for another RSA.  Some nurses proceed to Medicine.  A graduate of SHS Medicine would have taken 3 board exams:  Midwifery, Nursing, and Medicine. An MD graduate of SHS would have served 18 years of RSA.

To date, SHS has more than 2000 graduates distributed throughout the country, serving in remote and geographically isolated communities. Overall retention rate is 85 to 90% of graduates. Indeed, the SHS has proven to be an effective academic program to address disparities in access to quality health care through the availability and deployment of trained doctors, nurses, and midwives in underserved areas of the country.

Here are some testimonials from the Necita L. Roa Legacy scholars.

This scholarship means a lot to me because it significantly reduced my family’s financial burden from my load allowance to my necessities for my internship at the hospital, for my service leave and for my board examination.

…..Rosemarie Del Monte, SHS Palo

The scholarship that we have received from UPMASA Necita Roa means a lot to us scholars especially during this pandemic where source of income was affected. We are very grateful to all the donors who were part of this scholarship program for extending their help to us during this crisis. May they receive more blessings and good health as well. Stay safe po, God bless you more.

…..Jeanette Pinkihan, SHS Baler

Your contribution has helped me and my family; you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school: learning.  Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. Thank you for your support!

…….Bons Stella Landayong, SHS Koronadal

It is now helping me a lot in our hospital internship when we are away from our family and in these times of crisis brought by COVID-19 virus. This scholarship will be always have my gratitude in helping me in my journey, be what I will become and to become a blessing to others. Your help will be cherished forever. Thank you so much!

…….Kiara F. Balo

Thank you to the generous donors, UPMASA, UPM-SHS faculty & staff, and to everyone who made this assistance available to us. I am truly grateful for being one of the recipients. This will certainly help me in my studies. I, as an ISKOLAR ng BAYAN, will do the best I can to be equipped and prepared, and go back to my endorsing community to serve them. The assistance that you provided will not be wasted, this will truly help not just me, but my community in the future. Again, thank you for sharing your blessings to those who are in need.
